E-mail: lchapin@umiami.ir.miami.edu Description This course examines a variety of art traditions from parts of the world other than Europe. This is not a chronological survey of the art but rather an introduction to aesthetic principles. This course will increase students' visual literacy by presenting art from a selection of cultures chosen to illustrate the variety of possible approaches to art. Textbooks:
Course Requirements There will be 3 exams and two written assignments. Instructions for the written assignments will be given separately. Exams will be based on lecture material and reading assignments. Exams will consist of both objective and subjective questions and art identification. Makeup exams will not be given unless the student presents proof that they were incapacitated on the day of the exam. Makeup exams will consist of essay questions. Each of the three exams and the papers will constitute one quarter of the final grade. Attendance Attendance is required. Students are responsible for all information offered during lectures. The instructor reserves the right to drop any student who has missed three or more classes. The student is reminded that it is his responsibility to withdraw if he wishes a "W" for the course. Class Disruption Policy The use of cellular phones or headphones is not acceptable in class. Personal conversation during the lecture is disruptive and is disrespectful of fellow students and the lecturer. Students causing theses disruptions will be asked to leave the classroom. |
