My current works are collages of maps and drawings, and interior and landscape images which aim to capture the basic character of either a real or imagined place, using a variety of visual techniques, because I am curious about the different ways we describe or remember a place or situation. I combine a variety of media out of necessity. I am intrigued with playing off a painterly approach against a more graphic style of representation. For my prints I work in lithography, silkscreen and relief printing (both collographs and linoleum cuts). My paintings and drawings are frequently started with printed elements. To me there is not a lot of difference between painting, drawing and printmaking, they’re all image-making tools, as is digital imaging, which I use to scan and edit material for photo lithographs and silkscreens.
My goal is to set up a visual situation which will engage the viewer for a significant amount of time, and leave room for their own speculation about the image. At one time very early in my career I thought I wanted to be a writer, inspired mostly by heroic works of fantasy about imaginary places, but I realized that while narrative interests me very much, it was the creation of another place that interested me more, drawing its map, constructing its history, and determining its character and look. The details of the story-telling was not the part that appealed to me, so I realized that working visually made more sense for me. My work frequently involves a shallow, stage-like setting -- its up to the viewer to supply the narrative.
