The single most important specific realization was that for me, creating good paintings depends primarily on understanding and controlling the amount of light and dark paint in a painting. Although this may seem rudimentary when stated on paper, in practice it has taken me several years to even acquire a taste of how difficult the effective adjustment of values is, and how far I have to go to master it. You don't really understand how hard some "simple" matters are in painting until you try to do them well.
