In my "Insect Series", my work explores the human and insect realm in a new light: the human and insect subjects are forced to be a part of one another's reality in these paintings, for either the good or the bad of the subject that is inflicted. This also creates either confrontation if the subject approves of the forced relationship, or it creates subjects that are more introspective as if they carry a burden. Some of these paintings also experiment with the 'dripping' of paint to create a sense of monumentality and the feeling that they may be carrying out their primal behavior on the picture plane. My work deals with the duality of these subjects: confrontation and sumission, human and insect, light and dark, focused and unfocused, the undesirable and the desired, and the horrific and the beautiful.
For my "Specimen Series", I deal with the idea of a specimen, as in an insect collection. My work involves a loss of identity, for each figure is dissected and studied, and given a number instead of a name. The numbers are reminiscent of body tags for the works to be placed in their filing tombs. The canvas acts as a sterile environment containing the specimens. |
