INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTING
COURSE DESCRIPTION
ART 202 is designed as a thorough introduction to the basic techniques and concepts of the most expressive and flexible of artistic media, oil paint. We will be investigating both traditional and modern issues in painting as we gain familiarity and facility in the handling of the paint itself. The assignments are generally be taken from still life, self-portrait, or landscape and are done both from direct observation and from imagination. There will be particular emphasis on paint application, drawing skills, value manipulation, color relationships, and compositional dynamics.

SEQUENCE OF TOPICS
Black and White Painting (Six Weeks)

We will perform a series of exercises which will allow us to explore the marvelous plastic qualities and the rich value range available with artists’ oil paint. We will focus on techniques that graphically express emotional feelings while allowing ourselves intuitive responses to the tactile qualities of the paint itself. There will be particular emphasis placed on developing the ability to create the illusion of light on three dimensional solids (chiaroscuro). We will paint from unfocused slides, still life objects, Cubist concepts, and black and white photographs.

Color Painting (Six Weeks)

Color Wheel Goes Round and Round A short but solid introduction to Newton’s color wheel and his theories of complements, analogous color, color value, triads, split complements, saturation, clash, discord, and ugly color.

That Ain’t no Dorian Gray By using texture, distortion, dynamic composition, and arbitrary color we will investigate our appearance in an expressive self portrait.

Still life Plus Perhaps the most important rule about "realistic" color is that when color changes value it changes hue. It’s easy for me to say but it will take considerable concentration and effort to make it your own.

Pump Up the Volume After looking at a broad spectrum (no pun intended) of Monet’s landscapes we will investigate the theory that underlies his choice of color along with his technique for applying paint. We will then go into the landscape and become Miami Impressionists.
