This is a view toward the crater of Mount Vesuvius from a location just outside what was the southern wall of Pompeii. 4,000 of the 20,000 residents are thought to have perished from the intense heat, gases, and volcanic ashe (up to 20 feet) that resulted from the eruption in 79 A.D. The last eruption of this active volcano occured between 1913 and 1944. Vesuvius is currently 4,200 feet (or 1,281 meters) high. Some geologists have estimated that it was 6,000 feet high before 79 A.D. Over 600,00 people now live near Vesuvius.
