The stone roadways in Pompeii have substantial ruts that were carved by years of use by wagons and chariots. The large stones seen inthe distance made it possible for pedestrians to cross the street without stepping in the water that regularly flowed through the streets or in any droppings that beasts of burden might have left behind.
