Courses within the Ceramics program focus on both contemporary and traditional concerns, enabling students to incorporate both the conceptual and traditional aspects in their work. In addition to hand building methods and figure modeling students learn wheel thrown pottery-making and complex glazing and firing techniques. Extensive mixing, glazing, mold-making and casting equipment as well as seven electric kilns and salt, raku, car and sprung-arch gas fired kilns make up this comprehensive Ceramic facility. Studio space is available for advanced undergraduate students.

MFA

Students explore various areas of interest prior to focusing on a direction. Group critiques help develop this direction. While the focus has been on the sculptural approach to clay, emphasis on the vessel is not neglected. Classes concerning the chemical principles of Ceramics are required and students are encouraged to develop their own clay and glazes. A course in kiln design is periodically introduced and students can participate in the construction of a kiln. Students are also expected to investigate areas of a specialized nature such as mixed media, or areas that are not offered as a regular part of curriculum, course content such as figure modeling, glass and slipcasting. Extensive clay mixing, glazing, mold-making and casting equipment as well as seven electric kilns and salt, raku, car and sprung-arch kilns and glass area make a professional study of Ceramics possible.

Each graduate student has a private studio which opens to either the hand building or throwing studios. Students are able to utilize these studios as well as a large covered outdoor space.
