The Ceramics/Sculpture complex is located on the edge of the University of Miamis Coral Gables campus. The ceramics area is approximately 5,000 square feet, and is surrounded by tropical landscaping. Each graduate student has private studio which opens to either the hand building or throwing studios. Students are able to utilize these studios as well as a large covered outdoor space. The well furnished ceramics area provides students with access to the following equipment: * 6 Electric Kilns 28/36/ and 28 stacking to 75 ht. * 36 w. Brent slab roller * 24 w. Brent slab roller * Brent extruder * Ball mill * 12 test kiln, 18 test kiln * 60 cu. ft. down draft car kiln * 100 cu. ft. down draft car kiln * 50 cu. ft. salt kiln * 30 drum hoist Raku kiln * Bluebird clay mixer, Soldner mixer * 18 electric wheels ( Brent, Shimpo, Pacifica) The ceramics equipment is located outside the studio under a protective concrete roof. This area also houses a well equipped glass blowing facility and metal welding bronze foundry. The University of Miami is interested in self-motivated students who have a thorough knowledge of the ceramic process. Students should be familiar with clay bodies, glazes, the firing of gas and electric kilns, and understand the importance of both historical and contemporary ceramics. Interaction among all areas of the Art Department is frequent. Group critiques are held regularly to encourage interaction and artistic growth. . The Department of Art and Art History also participates in a fundraising auction with the Friends of Art (an arm of the Lowe Museum) our participation in this annual event has helped with additional funding for visiting artists and scholars. Students are able to participate in the auction and a generous prize is given to the student who secures the highest bid for their work. The Ceramics Area has an annual Holiday Pottery Sale. Proceeds from the sales go to the Visiting Artist and Lecture program, which is over 25 years old. This well established and popular program hosts nationally as well as regionally known artists such as Lisa Clague, Jean Pierre Laroque, Arthur Gonzalez, Gina Bobrowski, McKenzie Smith, David Regan, Brad Schwieger, Doug Casebeer, Ed Eberley, Jim Leedy, Richard Notkin, Akio Takamori, Judy Moonelis, Paul Drasang, Chris Gustin, Dan Anderson, Les Lawrence, William Daly, Andrea Gill, Mathieus Ostroman, Stephen DeStaebler, Steven Hill, Jonathan Kaplan, Ralph Baccera, Josh Deweese, Russ Gustofson Hilton, John Roloff, Karen Koblitz, Dan Gunderson and others Every year Miami hosts Art Basil, Art Miami, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival and Palm Beach International Art Forum. The Miami art community also hosts numerous lectures at various institutions and there are many excellent museums, galleries and artists groups exhibiting work by a variety of artist. Museum in the area include: Miami Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami Art Central, Bass Museum, Lowe Museum of Art at the University of Miami, Florida International University Museum of Art (Frost Museum) Margulies Sculpture Collection, and private collections such as the Ruebell Collection, de la Cruz Collection, and Margulies Collection We encourage a visit to the department to examine our facilities and meet Professor Christine Federighi (MFA, Alfred University), and Bonnie Seeman (MFA, UMass Dartmouth; teaching wheel work and technical assistant).
