MASTER OF FINE ARTS

The Master of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) is the terminal degree for students of high ability and interest in the production of art who plan to pursue careers as practicing artists/teachers. The minimum requirement of 60 credit hours in approved graduate courses will usually extend over a full three-year period. 

The studio areas offered are:
•Painting
•Sculpture
•Ceramics
•Printmaking
•Photography/Digital Imaging
•Graphic Design/Multimedia

•27 CR Studio area of concentration
•12 CR Elective credits not restricted to courses in art
• 6 CR Art History at the 500/600 level
• 3 CR Art G598, Seminar in Contemporary American Art
• 3 CR ART 604, Seminar in Studio Art
• 3 CR ART 681, Writing About Art
• 6 CR ART 710, Master's Thesis
Total: 60 Credits

First Year (18 Credits)
During the first two semesters of residency the graduate faculty will guide, direct, and critique the student's work. At the end of the first two semesters all students will be given written reviews of their progress. Students may be put on probation at the end of any review and given one semister to improve or be dismissed from the program.

Second Year (24 Credits)
At the beginning of the second year, each MFA candidate selects a thesis comittee of four faculty members, one of whom must be in his/her area of specialization, and one faculty member from outside the studio program or department. The committee chair must be a member of the University Graduate Faculty. Members of the thesis committee will oversee student progress on a continuing basis. After completing 30 credits the student will be reviewed for candidacy.

Upon acceptance as a candidate for the MFA degree, each student must fill out and submit the "Application for Admission to Candidacy for the Master's Degree" to the Graduate School.

Third Year (18 Credits)

At the close of the third year, each MFA candidate must:
•Have the "Certificate of Approval of MFA Thesis Project" placed on file in the department office.
•Submit a written thesis document including supporting documentation (slides) to the department no later than two weeks prior to graduation.
•Exhibit their thesis work in the Lowe Are Museum on campus.

Application Policies
Applications for admission into the MFA Program are considered only in the spring (February 15th deadline) for admission the following fall semester. Applications for admission should be submitted directly to the Department of Art and Art History along with:

•A portfolio of 20 labeled slides in a slide carousel.
•Complete transcripts from all schools attended.
•Three letters of recommendation.
•A non-refundable $50.00 application fee.

Financial Assistance
Teaching Assistantships: At the time of application for admission into the MFA Program, applicants must submit the Department of Art and Art History Assistantship Application form. This form is available from the Department of Art and Art History. Assistantships include a stipend plus full or partial tuition waivers.
