The hauntingly macabre frescoes of Buonamico di Buffalmacco are seemingly designed as a cautionary tale to laity and religious alike that there will be eternal consequences for one's moral choices. Probably an appropriate subject matter for a mortuary. The severe tone reflected the misery and fear of a time ravaged by the Plague. The image above depicts souls being harvested from the deceased by demons (upper center) and angels (upper right). I particularly love the plaid suit on the upper left figure. | ||||||||||
